Summary

Eckhart Tolle is emerging as one of today's most inspiring teachers。 In The Power of Now, a #1 national bestseller, the author describes his transition from despair to self-realization soon after his 29th birthday。 Tolle took another ten years to understand this transformation, during which time he evolved a philosophy that has parallels in Buddhism, relaxation techniques, and meditation theory but is also eminently practical。 In The Power of Now he shows readers how to recognize themselves as the creators of their own pain, and how to have a pain-free existence by living fully in the present。 Accessing the deepest self, the true self, can be learned, he says, by freeing ourselves from the conflicting, unreasonable demands of the mind and living present, fully, and intensely, in the Now。

A book worth reading。 Perhaps I am further in my enlightenment journey than I originally thought for a lot of the teachings I found repetitive and obvious。 The book isn't written in the most interesting way, but the short chapters help get through it faster。 Some of the concepts are so abstract they would have done better had examples been presented。 A book worth reading。 Perhaps I am further in my enlightenment journey than I originally thought for a lot of the teachings I found repetitive and obvious。 The book isn't written in the most interesting way, but the short chapters help get through it faster。 Some of the concepts are so abstract they would have done better had examples been presented。 。。。more

An incredibly insightful read, came to me at the perfect time in the perfect place!

I definitely think that the book was relatively redundant when responding to answers saying to be present will answer all problems but I appreciate the new perspective and will use them in my daily life。

Completely life-changing for me。 A book I would recommend to everyone if I could。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Finding peace within every day, within each day-to-day, within each breath。 Now, while i hope this to be true in terms of my interpretation of the book, what is said in theory, I find it somewhat trying to put it into practise。 But i remain hopeful that my soul will prevail, as i see little moments here and there have drastically changed, energetically, for the best。 thank you eckhart

Some excellent points, also some big and perhaps unsubstantiated claims about the nature of things。 A lot of opinion being put forward but certainly interesting interpretations and useful insights。

Basically headspace in the 90sMumbo jumbo way of explaining but content wise I get ittt

I've liked that the writer mentioned the Sufism, which is the mystical branch of Islam。 Sufism have a great saying: {The Sufi is the son of time present}。 They valued the power of now since long time ago。I have learned from this book that, you can not be both unhappy and fully present in the Now。 Also, that any action is better than no action, especially if you have been stuck in unhappy situation for a long time。I've also liked the story of the ancient Greece philosopher, when he was told that I've liked that the writer mentioned the Sufism, which is the mystical branch of Islam。 Sufism have a great saying: {The Sufi is the son of time present}。 They valued the power of now since long time ago。I have learned from this book that, you can not be both unhappy and fully present in the Now。 Also, that any action is better than no action, especially if you have been stuck in unhappy situation for a long time。I've also liked the story of the ancient Greece philosopher, when he was told that his son had died in an accident, replied I knew he was not immortal。There was a very nice statement about finding God, how can you find that which was never lost!!!!! 。。。more

This is 100% the type of book all new-age spiritualists should read in order to grasp the beginning and fundamental concepts that create “spirituality”。 It is a long read with a few unfamiliar words but it is not a difficult read。 It took me about a month to finish this book because it does require you to absorb what was all said in just one page as it is content heavy。

This book has a lot of meat to it。 I listened to this book so I’d like to read it again。 It aligns with the powerful ideas behind staying present and being mindful。 Powerful practices that I believe in。

De lectura obligatoria。 Lo tuve que leer despacio, incluso repitiendo algún que otro capítulo, para asimilar mejor los conceptos。

“Presence is the key。 The Now is the key。” This book is a guide to transforming the way you think, formatted in a question and answer type journey to challenge change。 Simple dialogue with profound significance that really gets you evaluating how the past and future control so much when in fact the power really is in the Now。 The power behind such simple words like “is”, “Being” and “peace” are explored。 Honestly I took my time with this one because it was no easy read。 It encourages periodical “Presence is the key。 The Now is the key。” This book is a guide to transforming the way you think, formatted in a question and answer type journey to challenge change。 Simple dialogue with profound significance that really gets you evaluating how the past and future control so much when in fact the power really is in the Now。 The power behind such simple words like “is”, “Being” and “peace” are explored。 Honestly I took my time with this one because it was no easy read。 It encourages periodical pauses to reflect, to digest, to put into action and most importantly to just BE。 。。。more

I absolutely love everything Eckhart Tolle does and find his spiritual teachings so easy to grasp and understand。 I read this after listening to his podcast with Oprah Winfrey on A New Earth, which I would also highly recommend 👌

If you are into self and/or spiritual exploration, this book is a good starting point。 If you read "The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck" and loved that, this book may be a good next read, as it repeats the same *wise* message again and again too。When I read this book, I was going through some major life changes。 I was overwhelmed at work, our landlord terminated our lease, and I constantly felt eyes prying in my back, judging me, weighing me down。 Of course, no one was really looking。 It was my If you are into self and/or spiritual exploration, this book is a good starting point。 If you read "The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck" and loved that, this book may be a good next read, as it repeats the same *wise* message again and again too。When I read this book, I was going through some major life changes。 I was overwhelmed at work, our landlord terminated our lease, and I constantly felt eyes prying in my back, judging me, weighing me down。 Of course, no one was really looking。 It was my own ego, my own thoughts, that were misleading me。By constantly focusing on things I have no influence on, creating hypothetical future events that may come to pass (though probably not in the way that I think they will), I'm limiting myself and not living to the fullest。 The only thing you can do is be present, in the now。If you find yourself stuck, and are open to finding new ways to un-clutter your thoughts, give this one a go。 。。。more

FinallyIve spent 2 years reading and rereading the book and at the third time of rereading it i have finished it 。It really helped me and helped me with other ppl, i feel like I understand them more and i can treat them better。I marked lots of qoutes that i see them as helpful things to do with my life。I recommend this book to anyone。Could be too much sometimes in expressing things but you're gonna get the point anyway。 FinallyIve spent 2 years reading and rereading the book and at the third time of rereading it i have finished it 。It really helped me and helped me with other ppl, i feel like I understand them more and i can treat them better。I marked lots of qoutes that i see them as helpful things to do with my life。I recommend this book to anyone。Could be too much sometimes in expressing things but you're gonna get the point anyway。 。。。more

I have to admit, I started reading this ready to debunk every single word written by Eckhart Tolle。 I was surprised when the book turned out to be much better than expected。 The only reason I’ve given it a three star rating is because at times I felt like the points he was making were repetitive。

To be honest I had a hard time staying in the present while reading this book, and I am almost 100% certain it is me, when i read it I was going through a divorce and my mind was all over the place。 I will definately reread it and change the review or not lol

As insightful as your mind will let it be。It is a very easy-to-read book。 Specially for someone like me, who's starting with their journey of inner peace。 It gives very special insights on how we're clinged into certain mental and physical patterns and it gives good practices on how to step out of them。 Not all of them are easy to understand since we haven't experienced that sense of inner peace, but hopefully it will help more people as it did for me。 I'll try to follow some of these teachings As insightful as your mind will let it be。It is a very easy-to-read book。 Specially for someone like me, who's starting with their journey of inner peace。 It gives very special insights on how we're clinged into certain mental and physical patterns and it gives good practices on how to step out of them。 Not all of them are easy to understand since we haven't experienced that sense of inner peace, but hopefully it will help more people as it did for me。 I'll try to follow some of these teachings and hopefully continue to grow on this path 。。。more

Not without merit, and certainly has got me thinking a little。 However, the majority of it is (to my mind, however small) tosh and nonsensical。

Elkhart Tolle is filled with wisdom and has a beautiful, direct way of expressing his beliefs。 I just finished writing key takeaways from this book and could not stop。 Few books have resonated with me in the way this one has。 Highly recommend

Lindsey Ohlin

He has a beautiful way of explaining difficult to understand concepts in a simple way。

If I say that nothing in here felt new, it’s not a dig at Eckhart Tolle。 In fact, I think what he’s elucidated here is a concept that’s been since picked up by therapists and proponents of meditation and mindfulness, the M&Ms of mental health coping mechanisms。 So we have this basic need to understand that ‘you are not your thoughts’, or, as I call it, Therapy 101。“The fact is that, in a very similar way [to schizophrenia], virtually everyone hears a voice, or several voices, in their head all t If I say that nothing in here felt new, it’s not a dig at Eckhart Tolle。 In fact, I think what he’s elucidated here is a concept that’s been since picked up by therapists and proponents of meditation and mindfulness, the M&Ms of mental health coping mechanisms。 So we have this basic need to understand that ‘you are not your thoughts’, or, as I call it, Therapy 101。“The fact is that, in a very similar way [to schizophrenia], virtually everyone hears a voice, or several voices, in their head all the time: the involuntary thought processes you don’t realise you have the power to stop。”“When you listen to that voice, listen impartially。 That is to say, do not judge。 Do not judge or condemn what you hear, for doing so would mean that the same voice has come in again through the back door。 You’ll soon realise: there is the voice, and here I am listening to it, watching it。 This I am realisation, this sense of your own presence, is not a thought。 It arises from beyond the mind。”Allowing your emotions to dictate your responses leads to bad outcomes!“The pain that you create now is always some form of non-acceptance, some form of unconscious resistance to what is。 On the level of thought, the resistance is some form of judgement。 On the emotional level, it is some form of negativity。 The intensity of the pain depends on the degree of resistance to the present moment, and this in turn depends on how strongly you are identified with your mind。 […] the more you are able to honour and accept the Now, the more you are free of pain, of suffering – and free of the egoic mind。”“Where there is anger, there is always pain underneath。”How to cope with this is to acknowledge the negative thought and let it pass on without acting upon it。 AKA, Applied Therapy 101, AKA, the hardest shit in the world to actually accomplish。“Focus attention on the feeling inside you。 Know that it is the pain-body。 Accept that it is there。 Don’t think about it – don’t let the feeling turn into thinking。 Don’t make an identity for yourself out of it。 Stay present。”“Observe the peculiar pleasure you derive from being unhappy。 Observe the compulsion to talk or think about it。 The resistance will cease if you make it conscious。”The future is a shit place to live。 Move back to the present。“This kind of psychological fear is always of something that might happen, not of something that is happening now。 You are in the here and now, while your mind is in the future。 This creates an anxiety gap。 […] You can always cope with the present moment, but you cannot cope with something that is only a mind projection – you cannot cope with the future。”“The compulsion arises because the past gives you an identity and the future holds the promise of salvation, of fulfilment in whatever form。 Both are illusions。”“There is no salvation in time。 You cannot be free in the future。 Presence is the key to freedom, so you can only be free now。”“A victim identity is the belief that the past is more powerful than the present, which is the opposite of truth。”Tranquility comes from acceptance, a gong my imaginary boyfriend Marcus Aurelius first rang literal millennia ago。“Because [the mind] holds the unconscious belief that its resistance, which you experience as negativity or unhappiness in some form, will somehow dissolve the undesirable condition。 This, of course, is a delusion。”Why, then, am I not giving this book more stars? It’s not because I disdain its primary text status。 Rather, it’s the fact that a good quarter of the book is obsessed with trying to shoehorn these revelations into other primary texts。 Tolle wants them to fit in not just with Judeo-Christianity, but with Buddhism and Islam as well。 Stop trying to make fetch happen, Ekhart! It’s okay if the peasants in the middle ages had different problems to us! It’s okay if you came up with a solution to a problem that’s only arisen in the last fifty years! It’s still a problem! And trying to wrap this text up in a Jesus bow will lose more people than it will win over。 Jesus himself might have been a fan of M&M, but there’s been a few too many million obscuring murders, tortures, rapes et al carried out in his name to make him a good candidate for the 'Power of Now' brand ambassador。 。。。more

While this book contains a few nuggets of good advice, such as being present in the moment and deciding on your own happiness, I feel like there is nothing groundbreaking that hasn't been said before。 It would probably have made a good magazine article, but didn't need to take up as many pages as a whole book。 While this book contains a few nuggets of good advice, such as being present in the moment and deciding on your own happiness, I feel like there is nothing groundbreaking that hasn't been said before。 It would probably have made a good magazine article, but didn't need to take up as many pages as a whole book。 。。。more
